Personal safety in the workplace is often overlooked. Workplace harassment is a cloudy area that can be taken to the extreme or not reported at all. Occupations with high incidences of workplace violence include: health care, social workers, teachers, taxi drivers, and people working alone.
Fortunately, you can take steps to avoid becoming the victim while at work. Your best defense is to know and discuss what security measures are available through your employer. In addition, you should take other necessary precautions to protect yourself and your valuables.
The main sources of workplace violence can be:
- Robbery and theft
- Employer and employee directed
- Domestic dispute
- Revenge
Some common ways that this type of assault occurs at work include:
- Disruptive behavior
- Verbal abuse
- Threats
- Sexual harassment
- Physical violence
The company you work for should ultimately be responsible for your safety. Responsible companies will have formalized written policies regarding workplace safety and sexual harassment. These policies should include definitions along with consequences of violation.
Supervisors and employees should be trained to recognize warning signs of potentially violent persons. Security procedures should be in place to protect all workers. Counseling and stress management procedures should also be available.
Some possible suggestions for workplace safety should include:

Personal safety planning is vital to the safety of women. Understand that you could be the victim of a violent crime anywhere at anytime. Think about what you would do in a certain situation (i.e., answering your door, driving home, taking money out of an ATM).
Assess Your Surroundings
Understand that most predators and street criminals plan their crimes (at least to some extent), most also look for certain characteristics that make good targets. It is safe to assume that the assailant has been watching you for a little while before he initiates the crime. Act confident and be aware of your surroundings.
Remember Street Safety
If a stranger approaches you in an isolated area and your instincts tell you something is not right about the situation — trust and act on your instincts. Maintain at least a 3 to 5 feet distance out of the reach of the aggressor.
Defend Yourself
When you feel that you are in imminent threat of harm, you have the right by law to use as much force as necessary to defend yourself. The assailant has chosen you as his victim because he views you as an easy target, your decision to strike at him will not be expected.
Do Whatever It Takes
If the aggressor wants material possessions like your brand new coat or the contents ... [Find out more ...]

Many people think that carjacking is not as prevalent as other crimes, but actually, it is. Carjacking is just the pre-cursor to much more sinister crimes like murder or rape. You really need to take precautions against allowing you and your vehicle to be hijacked.
Be aware of the possibility that it might happen. Look around your vehicle when you approach your car in a parking lot or on the street to see if anyone is close by. As you are walking towards your car, look underneath to see if anyone is under the car. Always check the back seat area before entering your car.
Have your keys in your hand so that you can get into your car very quickly. When you get inside your car, lock the doors immediately. Keep the car doors locked and the windows rolled up all the way.
Be aware of people around you while you are driving. Even a rolled down window can be a risk. It is easy for a carjacker to open your car door while you stopped at a traffic light, and commandeer you and your vehicle.
Whenever you stop, be sure that you can see the road between your car and the car in front of you; that will give you enough space to maneuver if ... [Find out more ...]

Staying safe in an increasingly violent society is the main concern of many women. But with the appropriate mindsets, you can live the life that you choose without becoming a target or a victim. The problem for most women is that they do not realize just how much power they really have. Thinking about the worst, they live in fear with situations which have never happened to them, and they are unprepared for these situations when it does happen. Here are five personal safety tips that all women should know to stay safe.
1. Do Not Live in Fear
You have every right to live the way you choose. Avoiding trouble can often be as simple as some attitude adjustments. If you live in fear, you can be sending the wrong signals and attract unwanted situations. Most aggressors choose their victims based on ease of opportunity, they tend to stay away from strong and self-assured women.
2. Be Observant of Your Environment
When you are out in the public, pay attention to what is around you. Be observant of the people around you, particularly those who may have looked your way too much too often. If you have bad vibes from someone, chances are there is good reason. Make sure that you observe and evaluate your surroundings at ... [Find out more ...]

Automatic teller machines (ATMs) have revolutionized personal banking, providing unprecedented ease and convenience. But they have also created new opportunities for robbers and assailants. Here are some ATM safety tips to keep you and your money secure while banking at ATMs.
• Keep a small supply of deposit envelopes at home, in your car or at the office. Prepare all transactions prior to your arrival at the ATM. This will minimize the amount of time spent at the ATM.
• Do not use ATM at the corner of a building. Corners create a blind spot. An ATM further from the corner reduces the element of surprise by assailants.
• Choose an ATM with maximum visibility. Pick an ATM at a location without barriers blocking the line of sight of the ATM. This includes landscaping, signs and decorative partitions or dividers. Barriers provide hiding places for assailants. If you must use an ATM at night, make sure it is well lighted.
• During evening hours consider taking a companion along, park close to the ATM in a well lighted area and lock your car. If the lights around the ATM are not working properly, do not use it.
• Whenever possible, use ATM that is monitored or patrolled by security officers.
• Try to use machines you are familiar with, and use ... [Find out more ...]
