Women, until a century ago, were the largest oppressed group in history. While women in the 21st Century enjoy their right to vote and hold office in many countries, many women are still persecuted and abused.

After New Zealand’s women earned the right to vote in 1893, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Canada and the United States soon followed. These countries have formed socially conceived attitudes toward women instead of ideologies. Unfortunately, sexism still abounds as ugly phantoms of our past in the 21st Century.

The most prevalent forms of modern sexism and gender discrimination involve sexual harassment, discrimination in the workplace, and spousal abuse. Working women who become pregnant are still being fired or reassigned. Legislations against such subtle forms of gender discrimination and inequality are slow in coming.

Knowing when to advocate and when to take actions is paramount in stimulating necessary changes in any society. Supporters must advocate for peaceful and non-violent approach to oppressions. In addition to supporting legislation against gender discrimination, activists in developed countries must initiate education programs to eliminate female circumcision, wrongful killings, trafficking, and prostitution.

Brief History of Women’s Rights

Women's Rights

Woman Suffrage and Women's Rights In recent decades, the woman suffrage movement has taken on new significance for women's history. Ellen Carol DuBois has been a central figure in spurring renewed interest in woman suffrage and in realigning the debates which surround it. This volume gathers DuBois' most influential articles on woman suffrage and includes two new essays. The collection traces the trajectory of the suffrage story against the backdrop of changing attitudes to politics, citizenship and gender, and the ... [Find out more ...]

The rights of women evolve as our society changes. In ancient Greece, women in certain city-states, most notably Sparta, commanded a level of status and respect that was unprecedented at the time. Spartan women enjoyed considerably more rights and equality to men than elsewhere in the classical world. Young women in Sparta received the same education as men, and Spartan women not only owned property, but also oversaw the property of males in the family who were off fighting in the military. Unlike other females of the time who were required to wear concealing clothing and stay in the home, Spartan women exercised their rights to wear short, comfortable dresses and travel freely.

In the Roman Empire, women were not permitted to participate in politics by voting or running for office, although they were allowed to own property, inherit property and conduct many types of business transations. Roman philosophers such as Seneca argued that men and women had equal rights to education, which served to increase the status of women in Rome.

Throughout the Middle Ages, women were not recognized as separate legal persons but were treated more … [Find out more ...]

Personal safety in the workplace is often overlooked. Workplace harassment is a cloudy area that can be taken to the extreme or not reported at all. Occupations with high incidences of workplace violence include: health care, social workers, teachers, taxi drivers, and people working alone.

Fortunately, you can take steps to avoid becoming the victim while at work. Your best defense is to know and discuss what security measures are available through your employer. In addition, you should take other necessary precautions to protect yourself and your valuables.

The main sources of workplace violence can be:

  • Robbery and theft
  • Employer and employee directed
  • Domestic dispute
  • Revenge

Some common ways that this type of assault occurs at work include:

  • Disruptive behavior
  • Verbal abuse
  • Threats
  • Sexual harassment
  • Physical violence

The company you work for should ultimately be responsible for your safety. Responsible companies will have formalized written policies regarding workplace safety and sexual harassment. These policies should include definitions along with consequences of violation.

Supervisors and employees should be trained to recognize warning signs of potentially violent persons. Security procedures should be in place to protect all workers. Counseling and stress management procedures should also be available.

Some possible suggestions for workplace safety … [Find out more ...]

Staying safe in an increasingly violent society is the main concern of many women. But with the appropriate mindsets, you can live the life that you choose without becoming a target or a victim. The problem for most women is that they do not realize just how much power they really have. Thinking about the worst, they live in fear with situations which have never happened to them, and they are unprepared for these situations when it does happen. Here are five personal safety tips that all women should know to stay safe.

1. Do Not Live in Fear

You have every right to live the way you choose. Avoiding trouble can often be as simple as some attitude adjustments. If you live in fear, you can be sending the wrong signals and attract unwanted situations. Most aggressors choose their victims based on ease of opportunity, they tend to stay away from strong and self-assured women.

2. Be Observant of Your Environment

When you are out in the public, pay attention to what is around you. Be observant of the people around you, particularly those who may have looked … [Find out more ...]

Personal safety planning is vital to the safety of women. Understand that you could be the victim of a violent crime anywhere at anytime. Think about what you would do in a certain situation (i.e., answering your door, driving home, taking money out of an ATM).

Assess Your Surroundings

Understand that most predators and street criminals plan their crimes (at least to some extent), most also look for certain characteristics that make good targets. It is safe to assume that the assailant has been watching you for a little while before he initiates the crime. Act confident and be aware of your surroundings.

Remember Street Safety

If a stranger approaches you in an isolated area and your instincts tell you something is not right about the situation — trust and act on your instincts. Maintain at least a 3 to 5 feet distance out of the reach of the aggressor.

Defend Yourself

When you feel that you are in imminent threat of harm, you have the right by law to use as much force as necessary to defend yourself. The assailant has chosen you as his victim because he views you as … [Find out more ...]
